Summer is flying by, with the arrival of August ushering in thoughts of Fall and beyond for some. We are still in full summer coastal mode here at Coastal Grandma Style, but we would love to share a great holiday gift idea that needs to be started now so it’s ready for gifting or even baking with in December- homemade vanilla extract! The great news is all the supplies you need are readily available and can be purchased locally and on Amazon.com. We will post the links to the products at the end of the post!
This is one of the easiest and well received gifts you will give this holiday season!
Here’s what you’ll need:
10-12 4oz amber glass bottles
Good quality vanilla beans (they seem to come in packs of 10 online)
Vodka, the cheaper the better, as long as it’s 80 proof (the 1.75L bottle gives you enough to make at least 10 bottles, with extra to spare to refill the bottles)
a small funnel
Measuring cup with spout for pouring
A sharp knife
How to:
Split each bean open lengthwise to expose the vanilla bean goodness (We also like to cut them in half, it makes it easier to put the 2 cut halves into the bottles)
Place the cut beans into each bottle (if you cut the beans in half make sure the 2 halves make each bottle to equal a whole bean)
Place the funnel on the bottle and measure out 4oz of vodka in your measuring cup and pour it in. Measuring the vodka makes for less mess and waste!
Seal the bottles tightly and wipe off any excess vodka or beans.
Give each bottle a good shake! You will need to do this every week to ensure a nice even infusion!

Now, we wait. Store the bottles back in the original box and give them a shake every week or so. By Mid December you will have AMAZING vanilla extract! The best part of this gift is the beans will last for multiple batches, tell your recipients to just top off the bottle with some vodka each time they use it. It’s the gift that keeps on giving!
We presented these as holiday hostess gifts last holiday season. Wrap in some tissue and a cute little gift bags and you’re good to go and always have a gift on hand!
Another idea is to wrap the bottles in festive holiday dish towels or potholders. You can also make a baking theme gift bag and add the vanilla as a personalized touch! Now, back to summer! Enjoy!❤️
