Succulents are good for the soul!

In today’s blog post, we are going to explore the world of succulents. These low maintenance plants are a great way to start a plant collection in your home. We had the opportunity to speak with Amy, the owner of Moss & More in Montclair, NJ for some great tips!

“There are a huge range of succulents to choose from”, Amy says. “The easiest to propagate would be the Echeveria, they have multiple leaves and petals which can be propagated anytime, just be sure they have a lot of sun and a delicate balance of water, not too much water but the soil can’t be too dry either.”

Examples of Echeveria

Propagation is the process of taking a cutting or leaf from one plant and beginning a new one. Many types of plants are much easier to grow by propagation than seeds, succulents are an example.

To propagate echeveria, you’ll need

-A mature plant

-Small pots (these work better than larger ones because you can control the water balance easier per Amy at Moss & More)

-Succulent soil mix

Remove the mature lower leaves by gently grasping and moving it from side to side until it snaps off, don’t force it. Leaves that are ready for developing into new plants will snap off easily. You’ll need the whole leaf, not partial pieces or damaged ones.

Fill your pot(s) with succulent soil mix and lay the leaves on top. Keep in a bright spot with lots of light, but not in direct sunlight, if you don’t have enough light you can purchase a grow light (another tip from Amy!)

Lightly mist the soil and leaves periodically to keep them from drying out. Do not overwater!

When the roots have started to sprout, cover them with the soil.

Within a few short weeks to months you will have small plants ready for repotting, and you will be on your way to starting your own succulent collection!

Succulents are generally low maintenance, require not too much water, and lots of light.

Here is a beautiful succulent garden we planted with established plants. So easy and beautiful!

We finished off the project with rocks from our garden. Makes a great display piece on a coffee table in a bright room! They even make beautiful gifts.
